The UK produced an estimated 9.3 million tonnes of waste packaging in 2001. Of this 5.1 million tonnes came from households and the remaining 4.2 million tonnes from commercial and industrial sources.
Overview
Recycling is one way we can all help to ensure an environmentally sustainable future for ourselves and generations to come. Recycling saves primary materials, such as wood, oil and coal. Annually, each individual in Europe uses 50 tonnes of primary material extracted from the earth, not including air and water. In Europe, this equates to the extraction of 20 billion tonnes of material from the Earth each and every year!
What can be recycled?
Many of the materials that we use every day can be recycled. For example: paper, plastic, aluminium, glass, polystyrene and fabric.
What is recycled material used for? Recycled material has a variety of uses and many of the products we buy are made from recycled material. Here are some examples: paper towels, tissues, egg cartons, plastic mugs, rulers, furniture, nails, screws, cans, pencils, and recycled glass can be used in road construction.
Why Recyle??
Because it make good economic and environmental sense and apart from this we all have an obligation to do so.
