  Landfill Directive

The landfill Directive has been in effect since 16th July 2004.

Landfill operators have been banned from the co-disposal of hazardous wastes with other types of waste.

As a result of the Landfill Directive –

• Landfill sites must be classified and have permits relevant to the kind of waste that can be disposed at their site.

• Waste must be identified according to a new set of codes and this will determine the kind of landfill site it can be sent to.

• Waste must be treated.

For example by sorting or reduction prior to being sent to landfill.

How Will Landfill Sites Be Classified?

Landfill sites will be classified to take one of the following: Hazardous waste, Non-hazardous waste, or Inert waste

Will My Business Be Affected?

If your business disposes of hazardous waste to landfill, it will be affected.

If your business produces hazardous waste that is managed in other ways, it may still be affected indirectly.

Existing Bans at Landfill Sites

Hazardous liquid waste
Whole tyres
Co-disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous waste

Future Ban

Shredded Tyres - 2006

What Is Required Of The Waste?

The waste going to landfill must be pre-treated.

What Is Pre-Treatment?

The waste must go through a process that may include sorting.

The characteristics of the waste must alter to decrease its hazardous nature.

The process must assist the waste handling or recovery.
